For Transferring and Scaling your Design onto a Painting Surface
Great for Murals, Signs and Studio Work
Pounce Sheets allow artists the ability to create highly accurate and to-scale drawing transfers of their mural designs quickly and without special tools. Pounce Sheets are full size paper rolls perforated with your design that functions like a stencil. Pounce Sheets allow you to take your design to walls of any size in one easy step. Use it on murals, signage, scenic work or in the studio.
Pounces traditionally use powdered chalk or charcoal powder. MuralColors has developed a Wide Dashed Pounce technology, allowing artists to also use spray paint as a way of transferring drawings onto walls with incredible detail and no smudging.
Our unique Pounce Sheets utilize a special 1.25mm wide dashed line on 40# bond paper with no tear-out or edge fraying. This allows for clean transfers on rough surfaces. Our unique dashed perforation combines the power of a traditional pounce with the crisp detail of a stencil.
MuralColors' Pounce Sheets are reusable and economical. For extra large walls, we recommend using a chalk line to create guide marks to help register a multi-sheet pounce. Use Pounce Sheets for your full design or detailed elements.
How to Prepare a File: Use any image or drawing software that is capable of creating a consistent line drawing. We require that the file is either png or pdf. Vector based files produce the best results. For more information on how to save a file, watch the brief tutorial below. A scan or high contrast photo of a line drawing, such as a marker or technical drawing also works.
Paper Size: Pounces are made on a 57 inch wide roll of paper, but the maximum image area is 54 inches wide. We will optimize the best fit for your file. For larger or higher complexity orders, one of our team members may contact you to confirm final dimensions before your pounce is produced. Designs wider than 54 inches will be produced in multiple sheets with a 1/2 inch overlap that include registration guides. For smaller files, pounces may arrive on smaller cut sheets. Give us a call or email if your project has special requirements.
Supported File Types: We support png and pdf filetypes. Images can be vector or raster based. Files do not need to be vector-based to be converted into pounces. Your art only needs to be clear line drawings or shapes with a consistent stroke width and crisp edge. Vector-based imagery must be saved as a pdf to retain its path information.
Accuracy: Please note that vector-based drawings will produce the most accurate results. Raster-based imagery is converted into single path lines and then processed. This conversion may produce some minor variations, but it will have enough accurate information to precisely transfer your drawing at scale.
How to Use Pounce Sheets
Fast Aerosol Method: Use a low pressure aerosol spray paint and trace over your design, keeping about an 8-12 inch distance from the surface using a wide tip. Allow the aerosol to dry before removing the pounce sheet (about 5-15 minutes).
Pounce Bag Method: Place about 3-4 tablespoons of either powdered chalk or charcoal powder in a jersey woven bag. If too much powder exits from the bag, consider adding a second layer of fabric. A square piece of fabric and a zip tie can also be used to fashion a pounce bag. Tape your Pounce Sheets onto a desired wall. Use a leveler as needed to ensure your design is straight on the wall. With all edges taped, proceed to tap the chalk-filled pounce bag over your design.
Vine Charcoal Method: Use a thick vine charcoal stick and shave down a flat side using sandpaper. Then using the flat side of the vine charcoal, draw over the pounce lines while moving the stick side to side to work the charcoal powder through the paper dashes with light-to-moderate pressure. Check for the quality of the transfer by peeling a corner of the pounce before fully removing off the wall.
Example of Acceptable Files:
| Raster Based Line Drawing (Pixel Based) | Vector Based Line Drawing (Path Based) |

File Size: Wall Size at 100 DPI |
File Size: Wall Size (Artboard) |
Important Information: PDF is capable of saving both vector and raster images, while PNG can only save raster (pixel based) images. In both file circumstances, it is not necessary to alter the file other than it be a line drawing. It is not necessary for a PNG file to have a transparent background. There is no need to break up the path in vector, or convert a raster-based line drawing to a vector path. For oversized artwork pounces, neither method requires you "panelize" the art to fit a 54" wide paper sheet–we will do that for you. We only ask that the file you submit is scaled to the actual finished wall size. We will determine the optimal panel size for oversized artwork and may contact you for further confirmation. If your artwork exceed the size limitations of your program, it is ok to submit your design in multiple PDF files. If your file size exceeds our upload limitations, please get in touch with us and we will assist.
We encourage you to add additional notes and registration marks, whatever you may need to appropriately lay out your Pounce Transfer Sheets. Remember that our Pounce Transfer Sheets can be used to transfer a whole mural, or just the detailed parts, such as portraits or signage, and because you can use colored spray paint or chalks, they can be used as the starting point of a mural, or on top of an existing painted surface.
For raster-based art, such as from Procreate or even a scan or photo of a line-drawing, so long as the stroke is consistent, we can convert it into a Pounce. If you have further questions, please reach out to hello@muralcolors.com.
